“Sub” refers to less-than and “luxation” is the root for dislocation. So subluxation means that the bones are out of normal position or function but not totally dislocated, they are “locked” in position. It is the process the body uses to protect the nerves that exit the spine. If the vertebra were to move too much they could severe the nerve and you may be paralyzed.
The body naturally protects itself by “locking” down the vertebra whenever it senses stress, weakness or trauma and naturally releases these “locking” mechanisms when we sleep. But, with repetitive stress, weakness or trauma the body will lock down on a continued basis, causing interference to the nerves that pass through these vertebrae. The body develops patterns to deal with these subluxations on a daily basis and a blueprint of disease ensues.
These subluxations are corrected by gentle chiropractic adjustments. Physical therapy, massage, and medication do not change the patterning or blueprinting of the nerve system. By removing the pressure on the nerves, proper nerve communication is restored, and the body’s ability to heal is reinstated with the body.
Another issue is that subluxations do not always cause discomfort or pain, but do reduce the body’s nerve supply, which creates abnormal communication within the body. Regular principled chiropractic checkups and adjustments ensure that no “hidden” subluxations are left unchecked.
