An Escalating Stress Level is Dangerous

Stress occurs when we cannot comfortably integrate all the stimulation—both positive and negative—from our environment. Stress comes from emotional, mental, and physical input. When an uncomfortable level of input passes a threshold, the brain shifts its function to respond in the stress mode. This stress response mode in the brain has been termed the “fight or flight” response and is as automatic as our cars shifting gears when we drive. Our brain shifts whether the stress is a vicious dog running towards us, the thought of losing our job, a prolonged nutritional deficiency, or being struck in an auto accident. It is also a normal and appropriate response to our environment. This shift in our brain causes a shift in our body functions as we prepare to focus on the acknowledged threat.
We are designed to handle short bursts of stress to be followed by adequate time for recuperation. Our systems are not designed to handle prolonged periods of sustained stress with little or not time for recovery. This lack of recovery locks us into an inappropriate, unbalanced stress state. Research has determined that functioning from the stress mode negatively influences over 100 body functions, because the brain is continuously sending the “fight or flight” stress signal.
